Five important things to remember before heading to rAge Expo 2018

rAge is an annual video gaming, technology and geek culture exhibition held in Johannesburg, South Africa. The show not only runs for three days filled with video gaming greatness but also hosts a HUGE LAN that runs non-stop. And for the attendees that attend the LAN, it’s a dream as its a weekend of non-stop gaming! And if you’re not attending the LAN you’ll have the opportunity to spend time on the show floor. Buying new games and merchandise. Playing the latest video games. Spectating competitions and so much more. With so much to do though it’s sure to be a long three days. So I put together a short list to make things a little easier.

  • Stay Hydrated

You’ll be doing a ton of walking and often a ton of waiting in ques and lines, so stay hydrated. And yes I know the Coca Cola Dome is indeed an indoor venue but trust me the temperatures rise to levels just not possibly heard off.

  • Withdraw cash before going

This is something I’ve often failed to do. Remember there are going to be tons of sales or items you may want that you’ll never see again for the next twelve months. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CASH. Although through recent years there has been tons of exhibitors with speed-points and debit card machines, but even the best of technology can fail at times and I’ve often also experienced that their card machines are either deathly slow or cannot connect to the network.

  • Money for parking, usually R20.

This isn’t really a biggy but it’s often saved me the long walk from across the main road into the dome itself.

  • Arrive early and if you’re not attending all three days, select one that will allow you to make the most of the show

rAge has become not only an annual event or exhibition to many here locally but rather a point of the year which is equivalent to Christmas or Eid. Yes, I know this may sound silly but there will be fans, attendees from across the country and some perhaps even from across the oceans. This means that you can expect ques for the entrance, for the bathrooms, for the demo’s playable on the day, for the stores with sales and especially for the food stalls. Arriving early will allow you to get a jump on all of these things, especially if you’ve perhaps seen a special being run at one of the stores there, make sure you arrive early and head straight to that store!

  • Study the floor map before hand

This follows on from the previous point. Arriving early. Studying the floor map will allow you to optimize and make the best of your time at rAge Expo. Too many times I’ve heard people complaining about standing for hours to play a ten-minute demo. Or standing for an hour, only to get to the front of the line and the item that you’ve been waiting to purchase has been sold out. Studying the floor map and planning ahead of time will allow you to get to the demo’s you want to play, stores you need to shop at and also give you additional time to do it all over again instead of leaving you stranded not knowing where everything is.

There are a ton more tips out there with other bloggers and sites covering what you can do to make the most out of your time at rAge Expo, but I thought I’d share these five with you. And if you only intend on going one day out of the three, I have one last tip for you:

Friday = the quietest and will allow you to cover the most

Saturday = usually the main day from the three, were the show hosts a record high number of attendees and you’ll quite possibly be finding yourself bumping shoulders every two steps trying to make your way through the floor. The bonus or plus about going on this day however is that since it’s the most popular day of the three, you’ll usually find more competitions, cosplayers and events/competitions for the public happening

Sunday = the best day for the bargains. Since it’s the last of the three days, exhibitors and stores usually give a discount on things, or mark things down. This isn’t always the case but I have had one or two bargains over the years. This day is also amazing for the finals of the main competitions held throughout the weekend.

There you have it. If you’re attending rAge Expo 2018 and happen to see me, please come and say hi. My planned days of attendance this year is Friday and Sunday.
